The Appalachian Sustainable Agricultural Project (ASAP) is a community-based collaborative in Western North Carolina working to sustain local farms and promote their products. Their Growing Minds Program is a farm to school program that provides farm field trips, experiential nutrition education and school gardens. I have had the opportunity to be involved with their recent “Chef Fest”. Recently I spearheaded a partnership between our local Western North Carolina Dietetic Association and ASAP to provide “31 Days of Nutrition” where registered dietitians have volunteered to teach nutrition classes promoting local food in elementary schools.
